Reciprocal links add value to your web site, let your web site visitors return to your site, and you'll get targeted traffic from clicks of your links on other web sites. As a positive side effect, you'll also benefit from increased search engine traffic if you have good incoming links. Best Methods to Find Link Exchange Partners! Now you know that link popularity is probably the most important factor to reach a number one ranking on the search engines. However there is something that most people forget when trying to do link exchange: Weight Quality VS Quantity! "Link farms" or "Free-for-all pages", were created for the purpose of automatic link exchange! So, you need to find good quality sites, how do you do it? Well, there are three different ways. 1. Search for link partners in specialized directories that focus on link exchange. Link exchange directories can be found here, in our Link "Directory of link partners". 2. Purchase one-way links from a directory that organizes sales of links. 3. Join a site like "LinkMetro.com". 1. Ask for a link exchange. Since every webmaster is eager to get links pointing to his website, most webmasters will answer favorably to your request. However, you should write personalized email messages, and include in the email the main reasons that the other webmaster should exchange links specifically with your website. Tell the other webmaster that you have put a link to their site (show them the page where you have put the link). Then tell the webmaster that it will benefit their visitors to have a link to your website. Lastly, give an example of exactly where you suggest the link should be on their site, and an example of the wording that they could use. Link exchange html code might help even more! This makes it really easy for them to link to you. 2. Offer an incentive for the link exchange If your product has an affiliate program, then you simply suggest that they promote your affiliate program on their site, and they will be able to get a commission for each sale for people coming from their site. Alternatively you can advertise on their site and pay a fixed fee. Another type of incentive is to offer your product for free, or offer free advertising for their site on your site. There are several alternative ways to do this. Here are some other important things you should think about: Doing all of this by hand can be very tedious, so I recommend using an automated script such as LinkMachine to manage your links, generate your link directory, find new link partners and send out e-mails. If your web host doesn't support Php, I recommend a stand-alone program such as Arelis. While not as convenient as an automated script, Arelis still saves a lot of time over doing it all manually.
Managing a quality link exchange directory is a terrifically effective method for improving a web site's ranking in search engine results. This makes it a necessary part of a serious SEO (search engine optimization) campaign. Managing a link directory by hand can be a lot of work however - besides finding potential link exchange partners, it means contacting them, posting new links in your link directory, and regularly checking that link exchange partners continue to link back to your site. Fortunately it's no longer necessary for webmasters to do all of this themselves - there are now several quality software tools out there that will automate most of this process for you. Our top recommendation is LinkMachine. This new SEO link exchange software does it all, from automatically finding link exchange partners to creating a custom link directory that matches the rest of your site and checking for missing reciprocal links. Plus LinkMachine's unique InstantLinks system will get quality links pointing to your site literally overnight. If your site doesn't support Php, we recommend the stand-alone program Arelis. Here are some questions and answers regarding search engine optimization (SEO), the "science" of achieving high search engine rankings! Link exchange is not the only topic related to this issue. Link exchange still remains the best way to achieve a first-page search engine listing! Question: Does Google AdWords Help My Ranking? Answer: No, (un)fortunately it does not. Google has a very strict policy on separating their search engine index and their pay-per-click service Google AdWords. The only way to improve your ranking is to optimize your site and to increase your Google PageRank by doing link exchange. Question: My web site's been listed in Google for several months now, but is nowehere near the top rankings for the search queries that I'm targeting. What did I do wrong? Answer: Apparently, Google places new web sites in a so-called "sandbox", not allowing them to achieve top rankings for competitive keywords right away. This contraversial policy is apparently intended to discourage fly-by-night sites that hope to make a quick buck by exploiting Google's ranking system. The only way to get out of this sandbox is to wait it out - sometimes the wait is several months, even a year. The good news is that once your site is let out of the sandbox it will immediately get the high rankings it deserves. Question: How can I tell whether my site is stuck in Google's sandbox? Answer: One clue is if your site ranks well in other search engines such as Yahoo! and MSN Search, but ranks in the hundreds (or not at all) for the same query on Google. Another way is to use Google's allinanchor: type search with the same query. If your site ranks well for allinanchor but poorly for the straight query search, it's likely that your site is in the sandbox. Question: Does the anchor text of the links to my page influence the position of the page in search results? Answer: Yes, it is one of the most important factors. Do a Google search for the query that you want your page to rank well with, for example "fine wine" (without the quotes). Now use Google's allinanchor search to find the most popular pages that have the words "fine" and "wine" in the anchor text of their incoming links, like this: "allinanchor:fine wine" (again, without the quotes). Usually, you'll find that the top 30 results in the straight query search will be almost exactly the same as the top 30 in the allinanchor search. The order may differ, but this shows how great an influence Google gives to the anchor text of incoming links. Question: What tools do you recommend to help automate the link management process? Answer: Easily the most useful link management tool on the market now is LinkMachine. It organizes links, generates a customized link directory, searches for link partners, and much more - it even analyzes competing sites to tell you exactly what needs to be done to optimize your own site. If your web server doesn't support Php, I recommend the stand-alone program Arelis. Question: When I ask Google, which other sites link to my site, Google does not list any sites. But I know that other sites link to me. Am I doing something wrong? Answer: If you have a web site www.xzy.com, you can find out which other sites link to your site by asking Google for link:www.xyz.com. Other search engines, such as MSN or Yahoo!, have similar features. If Google (or MSN, or Yahoo!) does not list all the links, this might have to do with any of the following reasons: 1.) Google does not list all of the links that it knows about. It tends to list links from pages with higher PageRank. Question: When my friend in New York and I in California both search Google for the same query, we get different results. Does Google provide different results for every region? Answer: No, it does not. Different results are related to the regular updates of the Google index. Google has several data centers around the US and the rest of the world. If you visit www.google.com, it is not guaranteed that your query is sent to the same data center every time. Usually your query should end up at the nearest data center, so that your Google search should be answered by the same data center every time. Thus, if you and your buddy get different Google results, this is because your query has been answered by different data centers. Question: I tried the Google Toolbar and found out that my Google PageRank is 4. Is that good or bad? How can I improve my Google PageRank? Answer: Most pages with a decent number of links have a Google PageRank of 4. Thus, your PageRank is OK, but of course you can always improve your link popularity and thereby improve your PageRank. If you want to learn more about the PageRank algorithm, please visit the following site (you have been warned: it might get technical): http://pr.efactory.de/ Question: I recently tried out the Google Toolbar. What is the Google PageRank and why does it change from time to time? Answer: The Google PageRank is a web page's score, based on link popularity, i.e. the number and quality of links from other sites. The Google Toolbar displays the PageRank in a very simplified and sometimes inaccurate way. Even some pages that are not in the Google index, will show a Google PageRank. Thus, don't worry to much about a low or changing value. Of course, this does not mean, that the Google PageRank itself is unimportant - on the contrary. It still is important for you to have other sites link to you. But for some reason the Google Toolbar does not really reflect the PageRank in a consistent and proper manner.
If you do link exchange, make sure you are doing it right! Avoid being scammed by the tricks some webmasters use! Here are a number of pitfalls to watch out for when exchanging links and applying SEO practices to your site: Inaccessible Link Pages Sometimes an unscrupulous webmaster will send you an invitation to exchange links, and say that they've placed a link to your site on their link page. You check out the link, it's there. You check out their homepage, it looks good - worth a link from your site. BUT - make sure that you can find a link from their home page to their links page. It may be indirect, such as via a site map, which is fine too. But if there is no way for you to navigate from the site's home page to its links page, then there's no way for the search engine spiders to find the links page - and the link to your site will do you no good. Some webmasters who do this are unaware that they haven't placed a link to their links page, and just need a reminder. Others will do this purposefully. If the site's links page has a PageRank greater than 0, then you can be assured that the search engines can and do know about the links page. If its PageRank is 0, then the page may be new or it may be inaccessible to search engines. Invalid or Indirect Links When exchanging links, check each new link to your site to make sure that it is a valid link that will contribute link popularity (and PageRank) to your site. One thing to look out for is links that link to a script on the other site (and the script then redirects to your site). These links do not help you. Another trick to look out for is links that include the nofollow tag, which tells search engines not to follow the link at all. These links will likewise do you no good. I recommend using an automated program such as LinkMachine that will check your reciprocal links for you and will not count indirect or nofollow links. Linking to Banned Pages Google doesn't allow "offpage" factors to decrease your site's search ranking. That is to say, if a link farm or a site that's been banned by Google links to your site, this won't have a negative affect on your site (it won't have a positive effect either). However, if your site links to a page that's been banned by Google, that can have a detrimental affect on the ranking of your page in search results. So avoid including on your site any links to sites that have been banned by Google. If a site has a PageRank of 0 even though it is not new, there's a fair bet that it's been banned by Google. Look up the site's domain in Google, and if nothing comes up, you know the site's been banned and it's best not to link to it. Unvaried Anchor Text It's become increasingly important to avoid having all of the links to your site use the same anchor text as one another. Google interprets this lack of variety as the result of artificial link popularity, and reduces its positive influence on search rankings. Therefore, try to encourage variety on the anchor text used on links to your site. If you send out link exchange invitations, change the wording of the site title or link anchor text that you suggest in the invitation. An easy way to do this is to send out link invitations using LinkMachine, which has an alternate profiles feature that lets you enter various different anchor texts, and it will choose randomly from among these in the link exchange invitations you send out. Whole Site Linking Purchasing text links from sites that sell them can be useful in some cases. But be careful not to purchase a link from a site that will place your link on every page in their site. So many identical links from the same IP address make Google's spider suspicious, and recently Google has been ignoring the influence of whole site links like that. Doorway Pages and Cloaking Don't fall for one of those SEO schemes that uses "doorway pages" (sometimes known as "advertising pages" or "promotional pages") and/or "cloaking" to generate lots of links to your site. While such techniques may see good results in the short term, they are prohibited by Google and may eventually result in your site being banned from Google.
